Q. If I subscribe to Moneywise do I still need a financial advisor?
It is always recommended that you seek the advice of advisors. Moneywise is a supplementary tool that provides you with information, ensures that you remain on track and measures the performance of your portfolio.
Q. Is Moneywise all I need to conduct my own financial planning?
No. Moneywise focuses primarily on providing tools to manage your investments for retirement. It is always recommended that you seek the advice of advisors. Moneywise does not offer solutions that address tax issues, the use of trust funds, estate planning, real estate or any legal related matters.
Q. Why is it necessary for me to subscribe to Moneywise annually?
Moneywise updates your portfolio and revises your financial plan annually. It is always important to conduct this exercise once annually. This way you apply a disciplined approach to investing, where you proactively manage your investments, thereby raising your probability of reaching your retirement goals.
Q. If my portfolio performance is bad is Moneywise able to offer me advice on how to construct a better performing portfolio?
Yes. Although Moneywise has not set out to change the world by imposing its investment philosophy on the world, we are confident that over time you will come to realise that your portfolio needs to change. When you reach this point Moneywise will gladly help you structure your portfolio and implement a new strategy.
Q. When I design a financial plan I keep getting the result that I will not have sufficient funds. What must I do?
It doesn’t help to save and action a plan that is not achievable. The point of a plan is to retire. Therefore you need to revise your plan, by changing some of the variables, until you get a scenario that you can live with e.g. increase your retirement age or reduce your required income in retirement.
Q. Does the retirement plan take tax into account?
The Moneywise model does assume an income tax rate and a service fee. However because there are many different tax rates, types of tax and different tax jurisdictions, the income you will require in retirement must be adjusted upwards to cater for tax. Part of your returns would be subject to income tax and part subject to capital gains, depending on which country you reside in.
Q. I entered my assets and afterwards realised I made a mistake. How do I return and edit the assets?
You cannot. For now Moneywise is designed to not let you go back and edit because too many people constantly fiddle with their portfolios. The object is to measure a fixed portfolio from one year to the next. If you need to make any changes simply send us an email with the changes and we will update your profile for you.
Q. I established a financial plan, saved it and now realise that it needs to be revised. How do I return and revise the plan?
Moneywise has designed the Financial Planning module in such a way that you need to check the plan and revise as often as you like before saving it. If you have inadvertently saved your plan, and need to revise it, simply send us an email with the changes and we will update your plan for you.
Q. If I have a financial advisor do I still need Moneywise?
Most definitely. Moneywise will ensure that you are well informed when you consult with your advisor. It offers you a measure by which you can assess your advisors performance. It will most certainly ensure that your advisor looks after your interests. If your advisor is a poor performer make no mistake Moneywise will highlight this, in terms of portfolio performance or through the lack of timely feedback from your broker.
Q. How come Moneywise is so affordable?
Moneywise is premised on the notion that successful investing needs to keep costs low. The commission model is not in your interests, and the fee based model excludes people who cannot afford good advice. By using a scalable technological model and by applying our research, and the research of others, it becomes viable to grant many people access to a good alternative solution. The scalability allows us to keep pricing affordable.
Q. If I am unsure what to do, how can I find out more?
Quite simply join our email journey where you will receive 20 emails on various topics, that will help dispel many investment myths, and which will show you why you need to subscribe to Moneywise.
Q. Can Moneywise be my financial advisor?
No. Moneywise is authorised and qualified to advise, but this defeats what we are about, and that is providing solutions to many more people than face-to-face advising would allow.
Q. Will Moneywise design a portfolio and help me implement a plan?
Yes, Moneywise will design and implement a plan for you where you need assistance in establishing brokerage accounts, and where you need to buy the correct assets in the correct quantity towards constructing your appropriately allocated and diversified portfolio. Simply contact us to discuss.
Q. If my financial plan highlights that I need additional insurance what does that mean?
Additional insurance refers to both life and disability insurance. There are many other classes of insurance, such as dreaded disease, income protection etc. It is advisable to consult with your financial advisor to ensure that your unique insurance requirements are adequately covered.
Q. Are you able to provide insurance if I require this?
Yes, if it is within South Africa or Canada.
Q. I am not South African, will Moneywise work for me?
Absolutely. Moneywise has been designed to work for South Africa, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and the USA. The approach is identical but the model uses different data and benchmarks, depending on your country of choice.
Q. Can I convert to a new currency?
Absolutely. Just contact Moneywise and we will convert your profile to the new currency. You will then need to revise your assets and your financial plan at the annual review date.
Q. How often does Moneywise update?
Once annually. There is sufficient research to suggest that shorter revision periods simply are futile.
Q. What type of investment philosophy does Moneywise base its benchmark portfolios on?
After reviewing the research, conducting its own research and participating as a practitioner Moneywise espouses an approach that incorporates the virtues of low cost, long term buy-and-hold, diversification and appropriate asset allocation, using passive investment products only.
Q. Isn't Moneywise a generic product in a space where investors require unique solutions?
Yes and no. Every investor has variables that are unique, which means each solution will appear unique. However when it comes to the actual investment portion of a portfolio, excluding cash or its equivalents, this should be managed the same way for all investors, namely positioned as close to an efficient frontier as possible. The only difference would be the mitigation of risk by adding a cash component, and here this will vary by investor based on the size of their portfolio, how close they are to retirement or whether they are on retirement. The Moneywise model varies according to the investor variables so no two investors would have the same portfolio returns or asset allocation, although the recommended assets would be similar.
Q. Are my data and identity safe?
Moneywise saves your data on a secure server. However, for peace of mind purposes, Moneywise does not and will not record any information that is personally identifiable. In other words no information such as ID Numbers, Passport Numbers, SIN Numbers, addresses or any other sensitive data is recorded. As regards your assets, you decide how you want these assets to be recorded. You are at liberty to use a tag that is meaningful to you. You do not have to use your brokerage names or account numbers. Finally, nobody can view the magnitude of your portfolio or the constituents thereof without your authority.
